Playful hybrid abstractions...
I am obsessed with things that appear to be between two states, whether it be matter, animal life or abstract art.
We are always in a constant state of change, regeneration and transformation. To me the most successful art is that which illustrates this progressive state, that which can't be described as a definite object or period in time, but hangs in the middle - a hybrid. In today’s multimedia age this kind of art is breeding fast, contributing to the increasing diversity of the Art world. It reflects a society bombarded by a mass of images, many of which are computer generated, sampled, remixed and rewoven together to produce something new.
An exhibition, which was devoted to this kind of painting, was 'Hybrids' which took place in 2001 at the Tate Liverpool. Simon Wallis described the artists in the exhibition as 'extending the art historical language of abstraction and figuration, by bringing an inventive engagement with other media, technology and urban life to bear upon their work. These painters are hyperpredatory: they use myriad sources and influences so that everything appears up for grabs. This dialogue is what gives these artists' practice the quality of hybridity'. Artists which were shown in this exhibition included Fabian Marcaccio, Inka Essenhigh and Fiona Rae.
Although I mention certain influences and directions in my own work, I feel that this statement 'everything up for grabs' perfectly describes the way in which I work. If I see a piece of material, image or object if it fits, it goes. I don't want to restrain myself to particular references and want my pieces to illustrate the intricate complexities and details of both the natural and artificial world.
